About
I am a quantitative marine ecologist with broad interests in the direct and indirect consequences of human activities in coastal ecosystems. The unifying thread linking much of my work is an interest in how interactions among individuals in populations, among species in communities and ecosystems, and between people and the environment influence large-scale ecological dynamics. I use models and field experiments to pursue research questions in both tropical and temperate ecosystems, usually with a primary focus on marine fishes. My work is motivated by my desire to enhance the success of ocean conservation and management by understanding interactions between ecological processes and human activities. I enjoy the unexpected insights that come from merging traditionally distinct approaches in order to make scientific advances and to inform ecosystem-based management in the ocean.
